Amid the commotion over his departure from the US presidency, Barack Obama has received widespread praise. Few, however, notice one of the greatest ironies of the government that has lasted for the last eight years in America.
Winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 - a prize that has had its much-discussed merits - Obama is also the President of the United States who has spent two full terms at war.
The president who leaves office on Friday to give space to newly elected Donald Trump is the first to complete two full terms with his troops in some active combat. And that says a lot.
By comparison, not even Franklin Roosevelt, the president who commanded the American military effort in World War II, spent so much time at war. George W. Bush, president on Sept. 11, did not get the "feat."
Bush, in this case, also spent a lot of time in war, but was able to "seize" a few months of his first term before the attack on the World Trade Center. The last Democratic president before Obama, Bill Clinton spent his eight years without going into wars.

In his favor in this matter, Obama has the fact that assumed the presidency two conflicts in progress - in Iraq and in Afghanistan. Its main involvements were in Syria and, mainly, in the fight against the Islamic State.
When he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, Obama seemed to be aware of this almost endless cycle of war. No wonder, during his speech, he said: "The harsh reality must be accepted. We will never end the violent conflict in our lives. "
